Globe Restores Internet and Mobile Services in Metro Manila After Major Fiber Cable Cuts

Globe Telecom has fully restored mobile and broadband services across affected areas in Metro Manila and nearby parts of Luzon following a major network disruption caused by multiple fiber optic cable cuts on May 12.

Thousands of subscribers in Metro Manila, including parts of Rizal and nearby provinces, experienced intermittent internet connectivity, mobile data interruptions, delayed text messaging, and temporary call service issues during the outage. Globe confirmed that services were successfully normalized by around 10:30 PM after emergency restoration efforts conducted by its engineering and technical teams.

According to Globe, initial findings revealed that one of the major service interruptions occurred in Paco, Manila, where underground fiber optic cables were accidentally damaged during drainage excavation activities conducted by a subcontractor working on a Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) project.

The incident reportedly affected several critical core fiber lines responsible for delivering internet and telecommunications services to multiple areas in Luzon.

Joel Agustin, Senior Vice President for Service Planning and Engineering at Globe, said the disruption could have been avoided through better coordination and stricter compliance with excavation protocols involving underground telecommunications infrastructure.

“Our teams worked continuously to restore services as quickly as possible and minimize inconvenience to customers,” Agustin said. “Incidents like this highlight the importance of proper coordination and communication before excavation activities are conducted.”

Globe is now conducting a wider investigation into the series of fiber cuts reported in several locations to determine whether the incidents were isolated or connected. The company is also coordinating with contractors, local authorities, and relevant government agencies to identify accountability and strengthen safeguards against similar disruptions in the future.

As part of its next steps, Globe said it plans to improve collaboration with the DPWH, local government units, and contractors to better protect underground telecom infrastructure, improve asset visibility, and enhance emergency response procedures.

The telecommunications provider also thanked customers for their patience during the outage and reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable internet, mobile, and broadband connectivity across the Philippines.
